Editorial Policy

Our Editorial Mission

Orthodontic marketing is loud. Patients face a daily flood of claims about faster treatment times, invisible aligners, and miracle retainers. We built Straight Smile Ortho to cut through that noise. Our mandate is simple. We provide precision orthodontics engineered for predictable, confident results. That requires facts. Not fluff. Not sponsored talking points.

The internet is saturated with generic dental advice written by marketers. We reject that model entirely. We exist to give patients and practitioners high-resolution clarity on orthodontic treatments, biomechanics, and oral health products. We hold strong opinions based on clinical realities. If a popular treatment protocol lacks peer-reviewed backing, we call it out. We do not soften our conclusions to appease dental brands.

Precision requires total objectivity. We deliver exactly that.

How We Choose Topics

We listen to the friction in the clinic. We cover what actually matters to patients undergoing treatment and the professionals guiding them. We ignore fleeting social media fads. We focus on treatment timelines, aligner material durability, retention protocols, and airway-focused orthodontics.

Our editorial calendar is driven by three specific signals. First, recurring patient questions that current online resources fail to answer accurately. Second, emerging clinical data regarding new orthodontic technologies. Third, glaring gaps in the market where direct-to-consumer companies are making unverified claims. If a new clear aligner company launches with flashy ads and questionable clinical oversight, we investigate their process.

We do not publish filler content. Every article must solve a specific, real-world orthodontic problem.

Research and Fact-Checking Standards

We do not publish summaries of other blogs. We verify every clinical claim before it reaches our readers. Orthodontics is a science of millimeters and precise forces. Our content reflects that exactness.

When we evaluate a new self-ligating bracket system or a direct-to-consumer aligner, we look directly at the biomechanics. We consult peer-reviewed literature, specifically the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. We cross-reference manufacturer claims against published clinical trials. We demand proof.

  • Primary Sources Only: We link directly to clinical studies, FDA clearance documents, and official statements from the American Association of Orthodontists.
  • Specialist Review: Every piece of clinical advice goes through a practicing orthodontic specialist before publication.
  • Zero Anecdotes: We reject anecdotal evidence. A treatment working for one person does not make it a valid clinical recommendation.

If we cannot verify a claim through independent clinical data, we refuse to publish it.

Corrections Policy

Medicine evolves. Clinical consensus shifts. Sometimes we get it wrong. When we do, we fix it fast.

If you spot a factual error regarding treatment phases, material science, or anatomical terminology, we want to know. Email our desk directly at [email protected]. We review all correction requests within 48 hours. We do not pass these emails to a generic support queue. They go straight to our editorial team.

If a change is required, we update the text immediately. We then append a dated correction log at the bottom of the article detailing exactly what was changed and why. We do not silently edit our mistakes.

Transparency builds trust. Hiding mistakes destroys it.

Affiliate and Commercial Relationships

Running an independent publishing operation requires resources. We sometimes link to oral health products like water flossers, interdental brushes, or specific orthodontic waxes. If you buy through those links, we earn a small commission. That financial relationship stops at the link.

Brands do not dictate our coverage. We have actively rejected lucrative partnerships with direct-to-consumer aligner brands because their clinical oversight failed our safety standards. We will never recommend a product that compromises patient outcomes just to earn a fee.

You will always see a clear disclosure at the top of any page containing affiliate links. We keep our revenue models entirely transparent so you can judge our recommendations on their own merit.

Editorial Independence

Our editorial team operates in total isolation from our revenue channels. No manufacturer, clinic, or dental brand can buy a favorable review on Straight Smile Ortho. We do not accept sponsored posts disguised as editorial content. We do not let brands preview our articles before publication.

If a highly anticipated oral care product fails our testing, we publish the failure. If a popular orthodontic trend carries hidden risks for root resorption or enamel damage, we highlight those risks prominently. Zero exceptions.

Content Updates and Freshness

Orthodontic technology shifts rapidly. What was standard practice a decade ago is often obsolete today. Outdated medical information is worse than no information.

We audit our core clinical guides every six months. During these audits, we check for new peer-reviewed data, updated FDA clearances on dental materials, and shifts in consensus among orthodontic boards. If a protocol has changed, we rewrite the guide to reflect current clinical realities. You will always find a “Last Updated” date at the top of our articles, indicating the exact moment the information was verified.

We keep our archives sharp. Your smile depends on it.
